A Little Bonfire Night Magic: Family Yoga, Fireworks and Moments of Calm

There’s something so special about Bonfire Night. The nights growing darker, wrapping up warm against the chilly air and that wonderful feeling of excitement as you wait for the fireworks to begin. I loved it as a child—the big chunks of toffee you get at the edge of the toffee apples and, best of all, sitting on my dad’s shoulders, watching the fireworks light up the sky. Those little moments felt like magic, and they’re still such lovely memories to look back on.

With Bonfire Night approaching, I wanted to share a few ways you can use my Bonfire Night yoga resources to create some special moments of your own. Whether you’re enjoying a cosy family weekend or planning a themed children’s yoga class, there’s plenty of room for movement, imagination, laughter and a little calm.

Make it a family yoga adventure

Roll out your mats—or simply find a comfortable space—and enjoy the Bonfire Night yoga flow together. You don’t need any yoga experience, and it certainly doesn’t need to look perfect!

Have fun exploring the themed poses, then try the partner poses for some lovely moments of connection. Let children show you their favourite movements, take turns leading and enjoy the giggles along the way.

There’s no rush to finish the whole flow. You might repeat a favourite pose, pause to share a Bonfire Night memory or turn a few movements into a little story. The most important part is spending time together.

Create your own Bonfire Night playlist

Before you begin, why not choose some music together? Creating a playlist can become part of the fun, giving children a chance to help shape the experience.

Choose upbeat, playful tracks for the more active parts of the flow, then switch to gentle, calming music for the slower movements and mindful activities.

You could ask:

  • What music makes you think of colourful fireworks?

  • Which song makes you want to stretch, wiggle or dance?

  • What would you like to listen to when it’s time to get cosy and rest?

Keep the volume comfortable for everyone, and remember that quiet is an option too. Your playlist doesn’t need to be long—just a few favourite tracks can help make the flow feel extra special.

Let their imaginations sparkle

Once you’ve explored the flow, invite children to invent some Bonfire Night poses of their own.

“What shape could you make if you were a sparkler?”

“Could you become a firework spreading across the sky?”

“What would a toffee apple pose look like?”

When it comes to ideas, anything goes—imagination is key! There’s no right or wrong way for a pretend firework to look. One child might stretch their fingers wide, while another curls up small before slowly reaching out.

Keep movements comfortable, leave plenty of space and let everyone choose what feels good for their body. Children can name their poses, teach them to you and even add them to the family flow. Sometimes their ideas become the best part of the whole adventure!

Wind down with mindful colouring and affirmations

After a weekend of excitement, offer a quieter moment with the mindful colouring sheet.

Set out some pencils or crayons, find a cosy spot and let children colour at their own pace. There’s no need to finish the sheet or make it look a particular way—this is time to enjoy the colours and settle into something gentle.

While they colour, you can read the affirmations from the resources aloud, slowly and softly. Leave a little space between each one, and let children simply listen or repeat any words they enjoy.

It can be a lovely way to bring your Bonfire Night activities to a close: a little creativity, a little connection and some time to slow down together.

Bring Bonfire Night into your yoga class

These resources aren’t just for family time at home. They’re also perfect for creating a special Bonfire Night-themed yoga session at school, in a community centre or in your own children’s yoga classes.

You could begin with a chat about the colours and shapes children might see in the night sky, move into the themed flow and partner poses, then invite everyone to contribute an imaginary firework pose. Finish with calming music, mindful colouring and the affirmations.

Keep the session flexible, with options to join in seated, move independently rather than with a partner, or watch before taking part. For children who find real fireworks too loud or overwhelming, a gentle, pretend Bonfire Night adventure can be another way to explore the theme—without the bangs.

Make a little magic together

You don’t need a packed weekend or an elaborate plan to make special memories. Sometimes it’s the simplest moments that stay with us: laughing through a partner pose, choosing a favourite song or sitting side by side with a colouring sheet.

I hope my Bonfire Night yoga resources help you bring a little more of that magic into your celebrations.
